1 Applique
These fabrics are constructed by sewing two cloths together. The thread that binds is worked in some design, and, after stitching the top cloth, is cut away round the stitches, leaving the required portions stitched. to the lower cloth. The illustration gives an applique effect with plain cloth squares on a crepe ground. This is a handicraft process -
2 Cloth Applique
A modern imitation of Eastern " cloth embroidery." It consists of cutting out variously coloured and shaped pieces of the same material and stitching them on to a coloured cloth foundation. -

5 Cloth Embroidery
A variety of exquisite needlework, practised by the natives of India, Persia, China and Japan. Coloured pieces of cloth are cut in handsome designs and sewn together with floss silk or gold and silver thread. The work is really inlaid applique. -
6 Swiss Applique
A very light plain muslin fabric made from yarns about 100's to 120's and 80 ends and 80 picks per inch and finer. The cloth is ornamented by small spots in relief fixed on the face. The spots consist of cotton fibres or a paste and are fixed so securely that the cloth might tear in removing a spot. -

11 Cordovan Embroidery
A form of applique work using gold or silver cloth and serge. A bold design is traced on the gold or silver cloth, this is cut out and placed upon thick canvas and the two pasted together. The canvas is then cut out to the pattern when the paste is dry. These motifs are then stitched on to a ground fabric of wool serge with silk thread. Applique work with floral patterns cut out of two sateens of different colours and then embroidered. Cut pieces of light colour are laid upon a dark cloth and stitched down with coloured silk, or dark motifs are worked on a light ground cloth. -
13 Backing
Strengthening applique or other embroidery - if the materials applied are not of the same strength as the foundation, they are to be laid upon. Backing is necessary for such as cloth of gold, satin, silk and brocades. Linen and fine holland are the usual materials used. -
14 Baden Embroidery
A variety of Applique work, in which motifs such as leaves and flowers (often hand painted) are cut out and sewn on to a foundation cloth, of a contrasting colour. The motifs are edged with chain stitch and the veins worked out in the herringbone or feather stitch.
